More Long: The Long Children

Charles Long and his wife, Louise had six biological children and one adopted daughter.


Lisette Wilhelmine was born 13 Nov 1865. She was the one who was listed as having died of Inflamed Brain on 17 Sep 1866.


Emma Louise Frieda Lisette was born 21 Apr 1867.  She would be my Great Grandmother.  She married E.A. Brueggeman.  She died 14 Apr 1932 at age 64.


Infant who was still born 6 Apr 1869.  Sex unknown.


Anna Friedrike  was born on 12 Dec 1870.  She married Rev. Carl Griese.  I learned today that they had no biological children but adopted a daughter.  She died 01 Mar 1943 at age 72.  They lived in Wisconsin.


Elizabeth Katharina was born 16 Jan 1873.  She married George Miller.  She died 11 Jun 1943 at age 70. She stayed in the Springfield area throughout her life and is buried in the family plot.


Friedrich Heinrich "Fred" was born 10 June 1875.  He had two wives and  five daughters by the first and we don't know about the second.  He was in Springfield, then to Chicago, and then to California.  He died 28 Apr 1944 at age 68.


Charles Henry "Charley" was born 2 Jul 1878.  He also had two wives and a daughter with each.  He moved to Des Moines Iowa and died there 4 Oct 1954 at age 76.


Etta Herra was the child who "was taken in".  We don't know when that happened.  She was born 14 Jul 1879.  She stayed in Sprinfield and died 29 Jan 1948 (age 68).


Ann Jackson Hilliard (grand daughter of Fred) sent me this wonderful picture today.  It is the only picture I have seen with more than one of the siblings in it.  This was taken in 1918 at Carl Griese's church in Anitgo WI.

Wedding Anniversary of Ernst August Brueggemann and Emma Long

Ernst August Brueggemann (age 24) married Emma Louise Frieda Lisette Long (age 21) in 1888.     They were married in Springfield, Illinois at her home church.  We are lucky to have a wedding picture and the article from the newspaper describing the wedding.

Excerpt of Letter from EAB to Emma during their Courtship

When EAB was in West Virginia, he was writing to his sweetheart, Emma.  Some of it is hard to read, where there are underlines, those are words I cannot read. Here is an excerpt from a letter dated October 24, 1887.
Dear Emma-----
Yesterday again I had another full house, when preaching.  I held service at Mitchell's school house.  I even had to sacrifice my coat for the audience.  Outside at the windows, some were sharpening their ears to hear the Gospel sermon.  The more I preach here, the more are coming.  Would only their hearts be _____ but like faith sail. Among the audience, there were some ladies who painted themselves, but here they have not reach the climax of perfection in this art.   The powder is too _______.    I ought not to be thinking about while preaching but it falls in every ones's eyes at once........Last Saturday, I wrote to your papa & sister Lizzie.  Of late I was not afflicted with serious headache.  The headache with which I was troubled must be ascribed to my long hair on my head.  They are tremendously heavy at present and around here is no barber who can cut them.  I do not want a farmer to practice hair cutting on my head.....

On this day in 1867

Emma Louise Frieda Lisette Long (Lange)  was born on this day in 1867.  She was the second child of Charles and Louise Long (Lange).  She was born in Springfield IL.  

She was baptized by Rev. William Bartling at Trinity Lutheran Church on June 2, 1867.  Her parents are listed in the record as Karl and Louise Lange.  Her baptismal sponsors were Albert H. Klein and Margaretha Klein.  The Kleins were members of the Church and in earlier records, you can find the baptismal records of their four children (1853-1858).

The original record is found on page 60 in the Baptismal Record Book 1838-1879.  I discovered some interesting things when researching this posting about Charles Henry Long and his family.  I'll cover it soon...a teaser...

Two Sisters - Two Clergymen

Emma Louise Frieda Lisette Long (born 1867) and her sister, Anna F. Long (born 1871) both married Lutheran Pastors.

Emma married Ernst August Brueggemann in 1888.  He had recently graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary.  He came to Springfield from Cleveland, Ohio.  He had several churches during his career but more about that later. 

Carl Daniel Griese seems to have had a less direct route to the Church.  He and Anna married in 1889 in Springfield.  They were still in Springfield on the 1900 Census.  He was 34 and his occupation was listed as Grocer (maybe working for her father???).  By 1905 they were in Wisconsin (Wisconsin Census 1905) and his occupation is listed as Clergyman.  Did he graduate from Seminary many years earlier and stayed in Springfield to work for her father?  Did he have a calling later in life?
